Founded in 1910, FC St. Pauli is a Hamburg-based sports club whose professional football team has alternated between the first and second divisions for many years. The club has no major national titles; its main sporting achievements are several promotions to the Bundesliga, most recently in 2024. Internationally, St. Pauli has appeared only sporadically, including a participation in the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
The club is best known for its distinctive fan culture and strong socio-political identity, which have earned it attention far beyond football. The skull-and-crossbones symbol, a clear anti-fascist stance, and an exceptionally active fan base shape its public image. This identity has made St. Pauli a global brand—often more prominent than its sporting results.
Home matches are played at the Millerntor Stadium, which holds around 29,000 spectators after several modernisations. Despite limited financial resources, the club has developed numerous players who later succeeded in the Bundesliga or abroad. Key figures include Holger Stanislawski, André Trulsen, and Ewald Lienen.
With more than 50,000 members, FC St. Pauli ranks among the larger German clubs—not because of a trophy collection, but due to its clear principles, which many supporters value more than sporting consistency.
