In his 226th appearance for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo received his first red card for his country in the shock 2-0 defeat to Ireland. The Real Madrid and Manchester United legend was dismissed for violent conduct after swinging his arm towards Dara O’Shea. Ronaldo was incandescent at the decision as he sarcastically clapped the Dublin crown as he trudged off the pitch.

It was a damaging result for Portugal as they failed to secure qualification for the World Cup but they will realistically achieve that against Armenia on Sunday - Roberto Martinez’s men only require a point. But there could be bigger consequences for Ronaldo as he could now miss the opening game, or two, of the World Cup. Red cards carry an automatic one-game ban, so Ronaldo will miss the Armenia clash, but FIFA could increase the suspension to three games. Although it was the 40-year-old’s first red card for his country, Ronaldo has been sent off 12 times at club level across his career.

Every red card of Cristiano Ronaldo’s career

Ronaldo’s first red card of his career arrived on the final day of the 2003/04 season with Manchester United. It was a poignant day in English football as Arsenal completed their ‘Invincible’ season but Ronaldo was also dismissed against Aston Villa, receiving a second yellow card for kicking the ball away. As the graphic below illustrates, Ronaldo was sent off four times during his first spell at Old Trafford, including twice against rivals Manchester City.

The legendary attacker is Real Madrid’s record goalscorer in history with 451 goals in 438 games, which included six red cards. The most famous of these arrived against Barcelona in the 2017 Spanish Super Cup. After scoring the decisive goal in a 3-1 win for Madrid on 80 minutes, Ronaldo was shown his second yellow card just two minutes later to the delight of the Barca fans. The Portugal captain was dismissed once for Juventus against Valencia and once for Al-Nassr.
