Where do Arsenal rank? Latest dates in a season where Premier League clubs could still win quadruple

Arsenal's incredible season continued at the Emirates on Tuesday evening. Superb long-range goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice helped them progress past Bayer Leverkusen into the Champions League quarter-finals. They will face Portuguese outfit Sporting. Mikel Arteta's team couldn't be in much of a better position; they remain fighting on all four fronts. The Gunners are top of the Premier League table, nine points ahead of Manchester City (who have a game in hand).

They also face Pep Guardiola's team this Sunday at Wembley, with the first silverware of the season up for grabs in the EFL Cup final. Meanwhile, Arsenal play Southampton away in the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Talks about a potential quadruple still seem premature; after all no Premier League team has ever achieved it and Arsenal themselves haven't won any trophy at all in the last five years. However, we are already over half way through March and the dream is still alive.

As aforementioned, no English team has ever won the elusive quadruple, and it got us thinking, what is the latest in a season in which a Premier League team has still feasibly been able to achieve that feat? It's now March 18 and it is still all possible for Arsenal, but where does that rank the Gunners among the latest dates where the quadruple fantasy has remained achievable. Let's find out.

The closest Premier League teams have come to the quadruple

The latest date in a season in which a Premier League team still had hopes of a quadruple actually lies with Liverpool. Back in the 2021/22 season, up until the final day of the Premier League season, which was May 19, Jürgen Klopp's team still harboured hopes of winning all four. The Reds had already won both domestic cups, but missed out on the league title to Man City despite getting 91 points, before losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

The next closest was Chelsea back in the 2006/07 season under José Mourinho. The Blues were still on for the quad on May 1, before losing the Champions League semi-finals to Liverpool, and eventually missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester United. Then we have the Red Devils themselves back in the 2008/09 campaign; they were still on for all trophies on April 19, before losing the FA Cup semi-final to Everton and the Champions League final to Barcelona. Manchester City twice made it to April 17 with the quadruple dream alive - in both the 2020/21 and 2018/19 seasons. In the latter they would win three of the four, but miss out on the Champions League.

As illustrated in the graphic above, we then have Arsenal in sixth position with the current date of March 18. It's the latest date in the Gunners' own personal history books that the quadruple has still be on. This date will at least reach March 22 when they play the EFL Cup final, and should Arteta's team win that, then it will go on until at least April 4, when they play Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final. Surely, Arsenal can't become the first team to ever win all four, but with each passing week the ambitious feat is looking more likely.
